There is no food that represents revolutionary Black culture in America like the bean pie. Black Muslims across the country make this pie, whether NOI or Sunni. Because the FOI have sold these pies on urban street corners for decades, it has become a hood delicacy. Most people turn their nose up at it, until they try it. And to answer the often asked question- yes, there are really beans in bean pie (smile).
Very few people know that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad himself came up with the recipe for this pie. He was an exceptionally good cook. In the book "Dear Holy Apostle" by Betty Muhammad, there is a story about bean soup that was made by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad with beef, molasses and other ingredients. She said it was the best bean soup she ever had. Before he created the bean pie, the Nation of Islam sold Pumpkin pie.
~2 cups of cooked NAVY beans
~1 stick of butter (organic if possible)
~2 tbsp whole wheat flour
~2 cups sugar or brown sugar
~1 can of evaporated milk or approx. 1 & 3/4 cups heavy cream (organic if possible)
~2 tbsp Vanilla
~1 tsp Cinnamon
~1 tsp Nutmeg
~4 eggs (cage free, organic if possible)
~Pie crust (this recipe makes 2-3 pies)
*Some people also add a few drops of lemon extract (completely optional)
Throw all of the ingredients except eggs in a large capacity blender. Blend well. Taste and adjust spices if needed. Add eggs. Blend well again. If the mix can not fit into your blender, then blend as much as possible then finish mixing it in a bowl. Pour into a pie crust. Place pie crust on a foil lined cookie sheet to avoid spills. Bake at approximately 350 for 50-60 minutes. Leftover pie mix can be frozen and used later.
There are many common variations for bean pies. Some are better than others. These are most of the ones I know of. I like some a lot, others not as much, but feel free to try them out.
~ I use much larger amounts of spices than what this recipe calls for (usually 2-3 tbsp total). Experiment. You can use ginger, cloves, allspice, apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice etc. instead of or in addition to the basic cinnamon/nutmeg. Work with it until you have your own signature blend- then guard it with your life (smile).
~You can replace the beans for an equal amount of steamed carrots or butternut squash. The carrot tastes more like a sweet potato pie. The squash tastes more like pumpkin pie. Both are very good.
~You can add cocoa powder to the mix to create a chocolate bean pie
~Some people will add about 1 cup of fruit such as strawberries to make strawberry bean pie, blueberry bean pie, etc.
~Vanilla bean ice cream and/or whipped cream go very well on top of bean pie.
~You can use a graham cracker crust.
~You can top it off with cream cheese frosting for an extra sweet treat.
~You can drizzle the pie with melted caramel
Warning: Bean pie is basically a custard pie. Never try to serve it warmed up. It will melt.If you are still too scared to make a beanpie (lame!!!), you can buy one (including VEGAN pies) from a good friend of mines. Proceeds go to a great cause.
